Industry and Immigration
In the decades after the Civil War, American cities grew rapidly as waves of immigrants arrived and industrial production expanded. Manufactured goods became increasingly plentiful, including toys and other amusements for children.
East Meets West
The completion of the transcontinental railroad opened new connections between East and West, increasing trade and encouraging migration. While manufactured toys were readily available in many places, children on the frontier often relied on simpler playthings made from materials at hand. In Vermont alone, thousands of rolling hoops were produced in the years after the Civil War.
Traditions Carried Forward
Fifes and drums familiar from military service found a place in civilian life after the war. Veterans marched in parades and community celebrations, helping carry the music and traditions of military life into a new generation.
